The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) provided funding to the NWBSN in 1996 for an environmental
protection program through the General Assistance Program (GAP)
grant to: develop the capacity and capability of the NWBSN to
provide environmental protection for its land, air, and water,
and to protect human health from environmental hazards. The
GAP funds enabled the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation
to establish a Tribal Environmental Protection Office (TEPO).
