The NORTHWESTERN BAND OF SHOSHONE
NATION (NWBSN) is a federally recognized tribe of Indians located
in, Northern Utah. As a federally recognized Tribe, the NORTHWESTERN
BAND OF SHOSHONE NATION performs the integral and basic legislative,
executive and judicial functions of government through its Tribal
Council and Tribal Administration, respectively. The Tribe in
the exercise of its governmental powers has essential control
over matters within the exterior boundaries of its Reservation.
More than 99% of the Reservation land is owned by the Tribe itself
and held in trust for the Tribe by the United States. In addition,
tribal members own over 400 acres of adjacent lands. Recently,
the Tribe developed a Comprehensive Economic Development Plan,
which addressed the lack of adequate tribal lands for the Tribe.
Due to its jurisdictional status, the Tribe is eligible for federal
assistance available for protection of the environment and human
health.
The NORTHWESTERN BAND OF SHOSHONE NATION is committed to the protection
of human health and environment on or near the Reservation. The
NWBSN’s program and work plan proposal are submitted to
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) annually to continue
to fund the Tribe’s General Assistance Program (GAP) and
EPA’s commitment to the Tribes, to continue funding for
the Tribes Environmental Protection Program that is designed to
address and ensure the public health and safety of the tribal
residents for present and future generations.
